IT operations is a key part of almost every company.
The goal is simple: keep systems available, stable, and running so the business can keep moving.
A big part of IT operations is catching small issues before they become big ones. A warning gets investigated. A recurring problem gets attention. Something that looks minor today could become an outage tomorrow and eventually affect customers, employees, or revenue.
Sometimes, I see a surprising similarity between IT operations and real life.
After spending years in technology, I’ve realized that some of the lessons I learned at work apply remarkably well to everyday life.
Small problems are usually easier to fix while they are still small.
Being late to work one morning? Probably not a big deal.
Being late consistently and ignoring the pattern? Eventually, it could affect your job.
Skipping exercise for a day or two? Life happens.
Stopping for months because you never get back into the routine? Now you have a bigger problem to solve.
Eating fast food occasionally? Enjoy it.
Eating poorly every day because it has become the easiest option? Over time, your health may start paying the price.
Spending a few dollars on coffee? Not a financial crisis.
But consistently spending more than you earn, making only minimum payments, and watching credit card balances grow? That small spending problem has become a much bigger financial problem.
You see the pattern?
Small issues become big issues when we repeatedly ignore them.
In technology, though, we don’t just fix the immediate problem. We ask another question:
What is the RCA?
Root Cause Analysis.
Why did this happen in the first place?
That question works surprisingly well in life too.
If you keep overspending every month, don’t just promise yourself you’ll spend less. Look at the root cause. Are you not tracking expenses? Shopping when stressed? Spending automatically without looking at your balance?
Then create some monitoring.
Set a credit card alert when spending reaches a certain amount. Check your balance once a week. If you overspend one month, adjust the next month instead of letting it become your new normal.
Same with relationships.
If something your husband does bothers you, one incident may be small. But if you keep quiet while the frustration builds, eventually you are no longer dealing with one small issue. You are dealing with months or years of resentment.
Sometimes a simple conversation early can prevent a much harder conversation later.
The same applies to our health, careers, friendships, homes, and even our own happiness.
If something keeps bothering you, pay attention.
If a headache keeps returning, get it checked. Don’t keep dismissing it as “nothing”.
If work is making you feel miserable every Sunday night, ask yourself why.
If your spending keeps creeping up, look at the numbers.
Not every small problem is an emergency, and we don’t need to monitor our lives like a data center.
But recurring alerts deserve attention.
Maybe one of the best lessons IT operations has taught me is this:
Don’t wait for an outage to investigate the warning signs.
Fix what you can while it is still small. Find the root cause. Put a little monitoring in place. Because a happier life comes from noticing the little alerts before they become a big one.
One alert at a time. One conversation at a time. And yes one brownie at a time.
